One day tour to Olympia
Early morning departure with the ferry boat to Killini, the mainland and the coach will drive for 50 minutes to take you to one of the most exciting sites on the Peloponnese! On arrival the local guide will be waiting to take you around this amazing site. The setting of the site is remarkably beautiful, a valley between the twin rivers, Alfios and Kladhios. Here you will see one of the Seven Wonders of the World, the Temple of Zeus, almost as big as the Parthenon where the elephantine and gold statue of Zeus was housed. See the Temple of Hera where the Olympic flame is lit and the most complete building on the site. Walk through the arched corridor into the original stadium of the Olympic Games, a 200meter track where 20,000 spectators used to sit.
The starting and finishing lines and judge's thrones are still there. After the lecture from the guide, time will be given for photographs and to browse on your own and maybe to run on the Olympic track!
The guide will then meet you at the archaeological Museum, which nestles in the trees housing the marvels that were found on the site. The two most famous pieces are the Head of Hera and the full size statue of Hermes of Praxiteles. See the pediment of Zeus presiding over a chariot race and the Battle of Lapiths and Centaurs, a fantastic frieze of the Twelve Labours of Hercules.
After the visits, lunch in the Olympic village of Olympia and time for shopping. Late afternoon return to Killini to catch the ferryboat back to Zakynthos.
